The 39th Life Sciences Academic Seminar was successfully held on the morning of September 8, 2026. We invited Professor Feng Gensheng, Director of the Institute of Oncology at Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, as the keynote speaker, who delivered a cutting-edge academic report titled New Ideas and New Strategies for Immunotherapy of Liver Cancer.
In this report, Professor Feng focused on frontier directions in liver cancer immunotherapy and systematically introduced his team's series of studies on the aging liver microenvironment. Based on animal models and multi-omics technologies, he explained how aging factors regulate anti-tumor immune responses, highlighting the significant impact of age on the efficacy of immunotherapy. Clinical data, he noted, also support an association between age and adverse reactions to immunotherapy. In the area of liver cancer immunology research, his team has identified a distinct neutrophil subset and elucidated its regulatory role in the immune microenvironment of the aging liver and in hepatocarcinogenesis. He also outlined the team's research plans in novel immunotherapies for liver cancer and early tumor diagnosis. Grounded in fundamental mechanisms and closely linked to clinical translation, the report showcased a full-chain innovation approach—from animal models to the development of clinically safe intervention strategies.
Following the report, faculty members and students in attendance posed a wide range of questions, which Professor Feng answered in detail one by one. This led to a lively and in-depth discussion covering topics such as functional validation of the neutrophil subset, mechanisms of immune regulation in the aging liver, immunity in aging-related liver tumors, targeted drug delivery strategies, construction of animal models, and translational research in liver cancer immunotherapy. The Seminar provided graduate students and teachers in the life sciences with a valuable opportunity to engage with frontier academic research.
