The 40th session of the Life Sciences Academic Seminar was held in Room B305, Mingde Building, on the morning of September 23, 2026. Professor Ou‑Yang Defang from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, University of Macau, was invited to deliver an academic report entitled Opportunities and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Drug Delivery.

Drawing on his research expertise spanning pharmaceutics and computer science, Professor Ou-Yang systematically introduced the cutting-edge discipline of”computational pharmaceutics” in his report. Tracing the developmental trajectory of this discipline, he illustrated how artificial intelligence, big data and multi‑scale simulation technologies empower the research and development of pharmaceutical formulations, and elaborated the construction logic of FormulationAI, the world’s first artificial‑intelligence platform for pharmaceutical formulations. In addition, based on monographs, SCI publications and patented achievements with industrial translation potential from his research group, he demonstrated the practical applications of machine‑learning algorithms, molecular‑dynamics simulations and pharmaceutical big‑data mining in the development of drug dosage forms. He also objectively analysed the practical bottlenecks hindering the implementation of AI technologies in the field of drug delivery, as well as prospective opportunities for future advancement.

Following the report, faculty and students present actively engaged in discussions and raised questions concerning the construction of AI‑driven pharmaceutical formulation platforms, practical operations of multi‑scale simulations, the development of formulation‑prediction algorithms, and the industrial translation of scientific research outcomes. Professor Ou‑Yang responded to each question in detail. This academic Seminar broadened participants’ understanding of interdisciplinary pharmaceutical research and built an efficient academic‑exchange platform for relevant research within the institute.
