Ning Gu, professor and doctoral supervisor of pharmacology and endocrine diseases discipline. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Kyoto University of Education (1998.42002.3), later got his master’s degree from Kyoto University (2002.42004.3), and then got his doctor’s degree from Kyoto University (2004.42007.3). After the graduated he joined Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) of Kyoto University as a researcher. Then he joined Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) as a researcher in 2009. He returned to China and joined the School and Life Science and Technology at Harbin Institute of Technology in 2010.

Research Description

Dr. Gu is now a fulltime professor and doctoral supervisor in charge of scientific research. His main research interests are in four research areas:

1). The studying on the pathogenesis and therapeutic method of diabetes, obesity and other endocrine diseases.

Diabetes is an endocrine system disease characterized by elevated plasma glucose levels resulting from either a lack of insulin production or resistance to insulin. According to statistics, a relatively small proportion (10%) of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus has type I or insulin dependent diabetes. The majority of diabetes patients are type II diabetes whose main mechanism is insulin resistance. Obesity is a major public health concern worldwide that can increase the risk of type II diabetes. Our studies aim to intensive research type II diabetes from several pathways, such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress and so on, clearing the pathogenesis of diabetes, obesity and other endocrine diseases, and find therapeutic method of these diseases.

2). The studying on the pharmacological and toxicological of nanoparticles and micromolecular compounds.

Nanotechnology and micromolecular compounds have become widely utilized in many fields. To fully exploit their potential application value and potential harm, we devoted to pharmacological and toxicological researches of nanoparticles and micromolecular compounds. We have developed a complete evaluation system of pharmacological and toxicological of nanoparticles and micromolecular compounds, and has effectively applied it to somein vivo andin vitro toxicological researches of some nanoparticles and micromolecular compounds.

3). The studying on the mechanism of proliferation and differentiation of stem cell, and reprogramming of somatic cells.

Somatic cells can be reprogrammed into Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) by the enforced expression of defined transcription factor combinations. However, there are still many knowledge gaps hamper the development and utilization of iPSCs and its technology. To harness the full potential of iPSC technology, we are studying on mechanism of proliferation and differentiation of stem cell, and reprogramming of somatic cells, and in search for the safety and high efficiency utilization method.

In recent years, his projects includeThe Studying on the Effects and Mechanisms of Nanoparticles to Plasma Glucose Metabolism of Mice During Different Development Period(the National Natural Science Foundation of China), andThe Studying on the Mechanism of TiO2 Nanoparticles on Plasma Glucose Metabolism in the Water Environment(the State Key Laboratory Project of City Water Resources and Water Environment),The Studying on Inducing Fibroblast Direct Reprogramming to Cartilage Cell by Recombinant Protein Specific Transcription Factor and Its Security(the National Natural Science Foundation of China), andThe Studying on Improving the Proliferation Ability of Mesenchymal Stem Cell by Transcription Factor Recombinant Protein(the Overseas Foundation of Heilongjiang Province), andThe Studying on Toxicological Effects of the Nanoparticles on the Endocrine System and the Mechanism in the Water Environment (the State Key Laboratory Project of City Water Resources and Water Environment), andThe Studying on Improving the Efficitency of iPS cells Inducing by Recombinant Protein (the National Natural Science Foundation of China).
